The birth of Pilates
Born in the town of Mönchengladbach, Germany, in 1883, Joseph Hubertus Pilates, creator of the Pilates Method, practiced many sports in his teens as gymnastics, skiing, diving and boxing. In 1912, he became a professional boxer and began to teach self detectives from Scotland Yard. During War I, in the year 1914, he was exiled, sent to an island where he worked in an English hospital with exiles and mutilated. There he initiated the use of springs in the medical treatment which would be the basis for later assist in the development of a system of exercises and equipment. Some years later he returned to Germany, where he remained a short time.
In 1923, Pilates moved to New York and opened his first studio. His work, however, was only repercursão from the 40s, particularly among dancers such as Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, Martha Graham, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins.
Joseph Hubertus Pilates died in 1967, to 87 years, without leaving heirs. Clara Pilates, his wife, then took the direction of the studio, continuing the work of the husband. Around 1970, she went over to Roman KRYZANOWSKI, a former student of Pilates for 40 years.
The distribution of the Method
Many of the students of Joseph opened his own studio and broadcast your technique, making important contributions also to the development and improvement of the Pilates Method.
The example, Ron Fletcher, dancer of Martha Graham, due to a lesion in the knee, held a consultation and began his studies with Pilates in 1940. In 1970, he opened his studio in Los Angeles and attracted many Hollywood stars, and is primarily responsible for the dissemination of the method.
The method came to Brazil through Alice Becker Denovaro, the first Brazilian to make sure the instruction of the Pilates technique.
Pilates in Brazil
In 1991, was the first Pilates studio in Brazil. The major responsibility was Alice Becker Denovaro. Graduated in Dance from the University of UFBA and Master of Choreography at California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, was the first Brazilian to make sure the instruction of the technique of Pilates.
Pilates teacher of the Ballet Teatro Castro Alves, has key role in the preparation of this professional company. Furthermore, Alice introduced the Pilates in the clinic in El Salvador, through the Pain Clinic of the Hospital das Clinicas - HUPES - UFBA. Today, El Salvador has over 20 studios in full activity, with a number around 2,000 practitioners of the method. Through Physio Pilates, Alice Becker is now licensed for Polestar Education for South America Thus, already held several training courses in Brazil, Venezuela, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Ecuador.
From the work of Alice Becker, new studios. The dancer Ruth Rachou, having developed a close relationship with the School of Dance of Martha Graham in New York, began to frequent the studio of Robert Fitzgerald, where the company's dancers Martha did their lessons in Pilates. So, decided in 1993, bringing the technique to the "Area of Dance Ruth Rachou", in São Paulo.
In August 1994, Maria Cristina Rossi Abram, graduated in Physical Education, after being certified in the Pilates Method of Physical Mind Institute in New Mexico, started its activities with Pilates in São Paulo, in CGPA - Postural Gymnastics Center Angélica.
In 1996, INELAM Garcia, after its certification with Romana KRYZANOWSKI, also in Sao Paulo began working with the Pilates technique. Licensed by "The Pilates Studio, INELAM is also promoting training courses in Brazil. Also in 1996, Elaine de Markondes, after a conference on physical techniques in Buenos Aires, began his research on the Pilates Method. Having participated in various courses and workshops, started in 1997 working with Pilates in Curitiba. Today, Elaine is licensed by the Physical Mind Institute, teaching courses in Pilates training.
In 1999, finally, for relief of the entire Pilates Community in Brazil, was officially the first Brazilian manufacturer of Pilates equipment, the Pilates Physio, based in Salvador / BA, working under exclusive license from Balanced Body ® for all of America South Today, Physio Pilates has customers in several South American countries as Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Ecuador. In 1999 the work reaches the river, through the Physio Pilates. In Goiás, the work began in 1999, and the first physiotherapist Bittar Adriano in Brazil to be certified by Polestar Education, the University of Pilates-Evolved for rehabilitation. In 2004, Physio Pilates Studios inaugurates their Master in Salvador and Porto Alegre.
